Following negative response from journalists and decreasing sales figures, Ito took responsibility for the vehicle's abysmal performance in the US. The decision backfired, as rival automakers increased the quality and feature content of their compact vehicles around the same time, pushing sales of Civic rivals such as the Ford Focus and Hyundai Elantra to new heights in the US. Honda CEO Takanobu Ito explained that the ninth-generation Civic was developed during the height of the global financial crisis, which led the company to believe that consumers would be willing to forego upscale content and quality in new vehicles as long as they were fuel efficient and affordable. The Civic was originally planned to become bigger, but after the global crisis in 2008, Honda wanted to make the car smaller, lighter and more fuel-efficient, while increasing space inside. The new model is slightly smaller and lighter than the outgoing models. The vehicle features an all-new sheet metal, with a longer hood but still a familiar profile-Honda calls it the "one-motion" design. It was also presented in Brazil in November 2011, and Thailand in March 2012, while it was sold in Australia from March 2012, and Europe in June 2012. On December 13, 2010, Honda unveiled a sketch of the new ninth generation Civic which was described as "energetic, sleek and aerodynamic." Both coupe and sedan concepts for the North American market were shown in January 2011. In May 2010, a Honda executive stated that the ninth-generation Civic was to be delayed into 2011 because of changing market conditions and tougher fuel economy and emissions regulations. However, the ninth-generation Civic sedan was temporarily produced in Japan for exports in early 2012 due to suspended production in the Ayutthaya plant as the result of 2011 Thailand floods. The hatchback version forms a basis for a Civic Type R (FK2) model, which was released later in 2015.Īpart from the 750-unit limited run Civic Type R, any versions of the ninth-generation Civic were not sold in Japan, creating a seven-year absence in the market until the release of the tenth-generation Civic in Japan in 2017. The latter two makes up for the European-market Civic range, which was produced in Swindon, United Kingdom, and received a completely different design and smaller exterior size. Four body styles were introduced throughout its production run, which are sedan, coupe, hatchback and a station wagon version marketed as the Civic Tourer. It was launched in the North American market in April 2011, Europe in February 2012 and Asia-Pacific in early 2012. Many elder shadow puppetry artists can perform dozens of traditional plays, which are orally transmitted or found in written form. Manipulated by puppeteers using rods, the figures create the illusion of moving images on a translucent cloth screen illuminated from behind. Shadow Puppetry was added to the UNESCO list of “Intangible Cultural Heritage.© China Puppet and Shadow Art Society, 2009Ĭhinese shadow puppetry is a form of theatre acted by colourful silhouette figures made from leather or paper, accompanied by music and singing. In June 2011 China adopted a law protecting intangible cultural heritage. Every puppet is an amalgamation of Chinese philosophies, imagery and love of harmony. The whole enactment in shadow play, including the vibrant costumes, has symbolic or allegorical meaning. The complex yet sophisticated designs that have evolved in shadow puppetry carry with them China’s human history. “You need to memorize the whole script and sing the lines of many different characters while showing their emotions with the puppet strings.” “Every movement has to be on point.” Wang said. He told China’s Xinhua News that it takes years before puppeteers are ready to go onstage. Wang was taught the art by his grandfather, a renowned shadow puppet performer. He broke the tradition of teaching only male students by including females and is now training 22 chosen students in the techniques needed to master the art of puppetry. With the support of a national fund, Wang is bringing attention back to the ancient art. One of the main leaders is master puppeteer Wang Bao from Langzhong in Sichuan province, who comes from a family that has been performing shadow puppetry for seven generations. Shadow Play is now popular throughout Southeast Asia as well as in China, where a group of passionate artists have protected the tradition against all odds. Music, accompanied by drums and gongs, was added and the puppets became backlit works of art. Voices were added so they could curse their enemies and sing their stories in falsetto like old Chinese Opera performers. Puppeteers with dexterous hands maneuvered the charismatic puppets from attached strings, enabling them to stroke their beards, nod their heads, kick their legs, wave their arms and carry swords. Over the next 2,000 years, the stone figures were gradually replaced by cow and goat-hide leather silhouette images with movable limbs adorned with brilliant, almost psychedelic costumes. Emperor Wudi saw the resemblance and sensed her spirit. He fashioned a stone image of the emperor’s departed concubine and placed it in a tent illuminated by burning candles, which cast a flickering shadow of the emperor’s lost love. The Taoist experienced an epiphany while watching children playing under parasols in the noonday sun and became inspired by the lifelike power of the moving shadows. ![]() Besides entertainment, the story plots of this performing art extol the loyalty, strength and honor of legendary generals during historical battles - generals who are now trending.Īccording to Chinese historical records, shadow puppets were originally created by a Taoist monk during the Han Dynasty (206 B.C.-220 A.D.) - contemplating how to console the brokenhearted Emperor Wudi, who was grieving over the death of one of his favorite concubines. Shadow puppets began to emerge from the dark shadows in the early 1980s when the folk art spontaneously reappeared at traditional rural marriages, funerals, banquets and special occasions. Then during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76), Mao’s wife, Jiang Jing, banned shadow puppets in favor of her seven boring, propagandistic “revolutionary operas.” However, after the fall of the scurrilous “Gang of Four” and Jiang’s suicide in 1976, the treasured silhouette puppets ascended again like red phoenixes, to the delight of generations both in China and the West. ![]() Traditional Chinese shadow play, a popular folk art for 2,000 years, met its virtual demise when the Communists came to power in the 1950s and Chairman Mao Zedong denounced the freedom-loving puppets as “bourgeois.” Once banned under the Communists, the beloved folk art form of shadow puppetry has enjoyed a resurgence in China. ![]() ![]() ![]() On September 17, GM stopped providing health insurance to 55,000 union members, forcing the UAW to pay for COBRA. The last strike coordinated by the UAW targeting General Motors occurred in 2007. This strike constituted the first major labor action in the American automotive industry in a decade. The new contract includes agreements that "in-progression" workers now get a faster path to top pay: four years from $17 per hour to $28 per hour rather than eight, $75,000-85,000 assistance packages for workers at the three closing plants, and 4% lump sum wage payments in the first and third years with 3% base wage increases in alternating years. The strike lasted six weeks, and ended when GM conceded to union demands on wage growth and health care costs because the new contract allows GM to close three factories: the Lordstown Assembly plant, the Baltimore Transmission plant, and the Warren Transmission plant. Demands by workers included increased job security, gateway for temporary workers to become permanent, better pay and retaining healthcare benefits. To learn more about NRE, check out THIS tech tip. – Enthalpy is also a significant player in the net refrigeration effect (NRE). ![]() If you'd like to listen to a slightly different way of explaining the concept, you can listen to that podcast HERE. – I also released a short podcast about enthalpy a while ago. ΔH includes both latent and sensible heat and is a measure of heat quantity in BTU/lb, while ΔT only calculates temperature difference and isn't converted to BTUs at all. If you'd like to see how I measure enthalpy in the real world, check out THIS video.ĭon't confuse ΔH (total heat change) with ΔT (temperature difference). This total air enthalpy change is a required part of calculating total system capacity, and it's a pretty simple thing to understand. If you want to use the Δ H to calculate the total heat added or removed from the air in BTUs, you can use this formula: UEI HUB Screenshot Using enthalpy to calculate the total BTUs moved So, HVAC equipment moves both sensible and latent BTUs. Air contains both the energy associated with the temperature of the air (sensible heat) and the latent heat stored in the water vapor. When we calculate the enthalpy of the air, we need to use probes that measure humidity and temperature, like the HUB2 probes shown above or the Testo 605i probes. In any case, the total change in heat content or enthalpy change is called delta H (Δ H), which is just another way of saying “total heat split.” We generally measure it in BTU/lb in the US. However, we can measure enthalpy in the air around us, not just in the refrigerant. There is also a smaller increase during compression. As you can tell, the overall heat content heavily increases and decreases in the evaporator and condenser, respectively. You may have even seen a pressure-enthalpy diagram before.Ĭharts like the one above show how changes in enthalpy correspond to changes in pressure throughout the system. In HVAC/R, we use enthalpy measurement to come up with the total heat change in a fluid, whether it's refrigerant, water, or air. Like most things, the scientific definition is as clear as mud. It's just a state function that depends only on the prevailing equilibrium state identified by the system's internal energy, pressure, and volume.
